Epitaph Written for the United States (on the day that William Jefferson Clinton was acquitted)
I remember sitting there helpless that the Republican Leaders could not get an edge enough to bring President Clinton to what at least I (in the minority according to the polls) thought was justice. He had, once more, pulled off a great publicity war that mesmerized the American public. Boy was I unhappy. I felt then, and still do, that this country would never be the same, but worse off in the balance. This is why I had to write the following epitaph:
On this 11th day of February, in the year of our Lord, nineteen hundred and ninety-nine, I hereby read the epitaph of the United States of America. A probable and impending acquittal of William Jefferson Clinton hereby marks the death of America -- a country we fought in the Armed Forces to defend. It was not an enemy from without, not Russia, Iraq, or any other foe, but rather an enemy from within that brought its fateful end. It was a moral and ethical sickness that the American people accepted and nurtured that ensured the demise of this great country. Once founded on truth, this country has now been abandoned to unacceptable thoughts and indecent behavior. It is now steeped in all sorts of injustice, rottenness, greed and malice; full of envy, murder, wrangling, treachery and spite, libelers, slanderers, enemies of truth, rude, arrogant and boastful, enterprising in evil, rebellious to parents, without brains, honor, love or pity. Of those who choose to behave this way, it can surely be said that they deserve to die, and yet they do not only continue, but they applaud others who do the same. Now this beast that has led to the death of this country, inflicting a shot in the back (a deadly wound), dares to slap God, on whom it was birthed, boldly in the face. It laughs haughtily, while boasting of plans for the future battles. Its aim is the death and destruction of every last thing about the now cold nation that was good and decent. We can only mourn and weep for the loss of America, in whom we once put our hopes and dreams. From here on, every attempt to revive this nation will be laughed at, mocked, disdained, and devoured by this masked and lascivious foe. May the Lord have mercy on this country's soul.
